Recovery and Relief

Woo-Hoo! The invitations are out! I must thank Ashlie M for all of her help with these! They were all mailed out on Saturday morning and I am thrilled. It felt like the last "big" thing we were on a deadline for and now that we can cross that off...I feel that we can relax a bit for a few weeks. Ross and I had fun putting the wax seals on the envelopes, although it was a bit tricky. Sorry if you got one that was a little strange looking, it took a few to get the hang of! :)

I realize its been a few weeks, so I can also update you on my foot--thank God, no cast. I stopped using crutches after about a week. When I went back in for my follow up doctor appointments the verdict was that since it's a hairline fracture it should heal okay on its own and if not improving over a few weeks to call podiatry. Yah00, I am getting around better and better, no boot for me! And, I made it back to the gym a few times this week. I can't run, but I am pretty efficient on the eliptical trainer if I lean on the heel more than the ball of my foot.

***One word of caution to all who plan to attend our wedding-BRING the ORANGE card from the invite with you. It is your pass on base and allows you to park your vehicle on base. I can not get any more, so please hang on to the one sent to you. If you lose it, let me or Ross know, we have a couple of extras.***

2 Steps Forward, 1 Step Back

I am happy to report that more deposits are going out and we have just about all of the details wrapped up and now it just comes to finishing the invitations, getting them out and confirming everything for headcount, etc...the things that can't be done until closer to the wedding.

I am trying very hard not to panic, but I BROKE A BONE in my foot this weekend and find out shortly if I will need to be in a cast or just a boot. I'm in a splint and on crutches at the moment.

I do feel good that a lot of the details are taken care of and I won't have to be going on a lot of initial meetings with vendors, but at the same time-I have a lot to do! Not to mention wanting to work out regularly, wanting to get things done for the house; the timing was not ideal for this to happen.

On the bright side--it happened far enough away from the wedding that even if I do need a cast, I believe it will be healed before the wedding.

Deadlines, Deposits and Details

I consider myself to be a fairly organized individual. Having said that, I must conceed that I will lose my mind about deadlines before this wedding takes place. I keep things on a calendar, but there is just so much! Booking vendors, working out prices, designs, etc and then 1st deposits, 2nd payments, headcounts, final lists, vendor information. Yikes.

Just today I had to mail out 2 second payments and 2 first deposits for vendors, with another one to go out in a few weeks--thank goodness there are reminders typically sent, because there are too many contracts floating around in my head and my filing cabinet.

Thankfully, we have been fortunate to book several of our vendors by referrals from friends and others in their business. I absolutely endorse our DJ, Elite British DJ, Mick Scrivener. He's been wonderful to work with so far and we are excited he will be handling the music and flow of our ceremony and reception.

Tony Eisenhower is the photographer we booked (after a terrible experience with another photographer who we decided not to work with), and Tony is great! He was so much fun for our engagement photos, we are really looking forward to seeing our wedding day pics as well.

The florist we learned about from a referral from a friend, Elegant Touch Floral Design, their arrangments were beautiful at our friend's wedding, and the prices are the best we found.

To be perfectly honest, in finding the wonderful vendors above, we also encountered a few vendors that we would warn people against as well! Trust me, I am pretty critical of all things, and I really like everyone I mention above to work with so far!

DETAILS...
We are getting married at the Admiral Kidd Conference Center and are hoping for a sunny day. There is a beautiful view, it's right on the water, and very reasonably priced. Being a military base, there are of course, a lot of regulations and deadlines. We knew that going in, but now that it's time to make sure all of the guests remember their parking pass, getting all of the vendor info (license plate #s, names, dates of birth..etc)...it feels like a lot of lists that are due by a certain day.

Is it common, as a bride-to-be, to feel like your head may explode thinking about all of this stuff? In reality, I know we have time to do all of it, and that it will all get done...but thinking about it at once makes me shudder a bit. Anyone relate?

90 days-Oh my!

The countdown continues...we are right around the 90 day mark and our wedding is fast approaching! It's been a month since my last post, but this month has been CRAZY busy! And for my friends who've called and not heard back...sorry, I promise December won't be as busy and I will stop being a dead beat friend.

I am proud and excited to say that Ross and I have made huge strides in wedding plans since my last post. We are getting our wedding cake from Crumbs of Paris (delicious. If you haven't had it, I recommend their pineapple marscapone cake). Today we went to the venue and confirmed the menu with the caterer, we booked the linens company through a friend (thanks Gloria!). The invitations are designed and being printed (thanks to Ileana and Ashlie's help with those!). It took forever to get the wording done--every book and website has a different idea for what to put and where to put it...finally everything lined up and is spaced accordingly. Hopefully those will be sent out in a couple of weeks. The good news is that my mom said she would address the envelopes for me--it's good news because that means the post office will be able to read it! It wouldn't be pretty if I was the one doing it, that's for sure. But I read in an etiquette book that you should never use labels on the actual invitation, it should be personalized and hand written. Is this true? Do people care or even notice if its written or on a label? I thought about it, and I couldn't tell you what the address was like on any piece of mail I receive. Hmmm... still need to think this over.

Our registries are done and the cards are arriving, we received the map/directions card to enclose in the invitations so people won't have any problems finding this place. I've talked with another friend (also named Ashley) about table cards, I've figured out the name cards for the assigned seating. I love crossing things off of the "To Do" list.

I am also happy to report that our kitchen and family room are almost complete! We finished painting the 2nd coat last night and are going to work on base boards and finishing the grout in the tile tonight...then it's 1 more coat of paint on the cabinets to go! Woo-hoo!

We couldn't have made all of this progress without a lot of help from so many of our friends and family--we appreciate everything!

More to come soon...

Progress is Wonderful

It's been a while since my last blog, but A LOT has happened!! :)

I believe we have found a minister to marry us! A florist to make the event pretty and we are cake tasting on 10.25.08 (had to reschedule the last appointment). It's strange how a couple of things falling in to place make all the difference. I also have a great friend who is offering to help make the table cards and another that is helping with invitations. *sigh* HUGE relief!

While looking for an officiant, we met with a minister that I know (she's great!). We had the opportunity to take this, marriage test of sorts through an appointment with her. It was neat--Ross and I sat away from one another and answered several multiple choice questions about all different facets of marriage to help determine where we are strong and where we may need to communicate more. It was great because it asked a lot of questions about important parts of marriage-religion, kids, locations, feelings...everything. We are trying to align an appointment with the minister to go over the results. I am excited to hear what she says!

Weddings Are in the Air

I love weddings! As much as it's stressing me out to plan...I absolutely adore weddings. Now, I've heard that the mid and late 20s are the busy "wedding years" where almost everyone you know is getting married, followed a few years later, by baby showers.

So far, the wedding season prediction is coming true! Does anyone else feel it too? We are attending weddings: October, November, February (ours), May, June! And we have friends that just got engaged.

A few updates~ I've done it. We are now scheduled to go in for a cake tasting next week. Also, I typed up the wording for our invitations and selected the font. I am going to see if next weekend my flower girl is around, and go looking for a dress for her as well. Things are getting done!!! (yea!!)

When it rains, it pours! For the past 2 weeks we've been trying to finish the kitchen in our new house, find an officiant, find a florist, and decide on centerpieces. The good news, is that all of this stuff, is happy, it's just a lot at once! :)

As for our kitchen-it's almost done. The counter should be here sometime next week, which means the new sink and faucet will be installed. A friend was out last night to look at the texturing we need done, and it looks like that will be done in a couple of weeks and we decided on the new lighting. For those of you who don't know...this completely relates to our wedding. Once the kitchen is done, we can resume eating real food. For the past 6 weeks, its been sandwiches, take out and microwave/toaster oven food. I will be so glad to cook somthing! (And something healthy, or I won't fit in my wedding dress!!).

As for the florist-Thanks Michele L! I have an appointment with the company you used for your wedding this weekend, and I am hoping it works out! I was considering having friends help me make half of the centerpieces and using hurricanes...but I think I want flowers everywhere, I really can't shake that feeling. My fingers are crossed for Sunday.

It is now almost time to send out invitations~they will probably go out toward the end of October, because we have to turn in a final list to the military base with everyone's name on it in alphabetical order. This is where a fear comes in-PLEASE make sure you RSVP. I am the worst offender-I always forget to mail the RSVPs out..but in this case if you are planning to attend, and forget, you may not be allowed on base! We have to give a final list 30 days before the wedding I believe.

I feel pretty good about things this week. Rehearsal is all set-the invitations are purchased and just need to be printed and put together. Registries are done.

One thing we've totally lagged on is cake tasting. We have it narrowed down to 2 places. One, makes BEAUTIFUL cakes that are very tasty. The other isn't as pretty, but is DELICIOUS. Hmm..I'm torn. Do you choose the beautiful/good or the delicious/plain looking? Any thoughts?

Flowers

I love flowers. They make me sneeze and can make my eyes all red..but I love them. And I want them to be a decent sized part of my wedding. Having said that..let's be serious. They wilt and die within a couple of days. Why am I being charged thousands of dollars?

For anyone else who is asking or has asked themselves that question, I want to tell you- there is a great wholesale flower shop off Moreno. It's on a little street called Metro; not sure the name of the place, but Metro is a cul-de-sac, and you can't miss it. Decent prices, great vase selection and a lot of additional decorations available there. Next I am going to a couple of places in Carlsbad to look as well-I will let you know if they are even better.

Anyway, I am still on the hunt for the ideal centerpiece to our wedding.

I've also done a lot of reading about varying centerpieces; so maybe half of the tables will have floral centerpieces and the other half will have hurricanes and votives on a mirrored plate with rose petals around the table? Thankfully, I have friends that are very good at making these things and coming up with great ideas (as I am many many thing..but creative is not one of them!). So if any of them are reading this--thank you so much for all of your help and advice!!!

THE WEDDING DETAILS...Important!

I thought it would be helpful to have this info online in case anyone else is like me and misplaces things! :)

**Please bring invitations and your ID's to the WEDDING! It is on a military base, and ID is REQUIRED, I also suggest making sure that your car registration info is in the car just in case! Currently, you are able to DRIVE YOUR CAR onto base, but if before our wedding the security increases, you will be instructed to park next to the base and be shuttled over--in which case the invitation is required**

Reception to follow.

ATTIRE: Semi-formal

We are so excited for our friends and families to come together and celebrate with us.

Martha Stewart

Martha Stewart. I hear that name and I feel like there will be some genius to the idea...sadly, not the case. I searched her website and anything that I could find with her name on it; but still don't love any of her centerpiece ideas that I saw for weddings. What has the world come to when Martha Stewart lets you down for decor ideas?!

I am changing gears and going with some girlfriends to another florist this weekend to see what I can think of-I don't think this should be hard, but at the same time, this is what you're staring at in front of you while you're eating...I want it to be pretty. More on this next week.

In defense of Martha Stewart's site...I did see some other great ideas on there...just not what I needed/wanted today.

Welcome to the mid/late 20's!

I give up. For months now people have asked what our wedding website is, and when we're getting one...well, I give up (sort of). I created this blog rather than a traditional wedding site so you can all join us on the journey to countdown our wedding. You see, we didn't just decide to get married. This year we've moved in together, got a puppy, got engaged, bought a house, are fixing (parts) of the house, training Heidi (the aforementioned puppy), and learning to bring our lives together and live as one couple rather than 2 individual people and planning our wedding.

Now, in addition to our wedding-one of my best friends just got married, Ross' sister is getting married in October of this year, my maid of honor (who is also my cousin) is getting married in June 2009 and my other cousin is getting married in May 2009. Weddings are everywhere! (Welcome to our late-mid 20's!).

There are so many wonderful things coming up, that the only way to stay up to date was to create a blog so everyone knows whats going on and what's new!
